Biomedical Research Disparities Analysis
Describe common disparities in biomedical research. Did you find evidence of disparities in the articles you reviewed for your PICOT question? If so, what were your findings?
Common disparities in biomedical research include underrepresentation of minority populations, gender bias, and socioeconomic barriers to participation. Historically, clinical trials have disproportionately included White, male participants, leading to gaps in understanding how treatments affect diverse populations. This lack of diversity impacts the generalizability of research findings and contributes to health disparities. Additionally, barriers such as financial constraints, geographic inaccessibility, and mistrust of the medical system—particularly among historically marginalized groups—limit participation in research.
In reviewing articles for my PICOT question, I found evidence of disparities in study populations and access to care. Some studies noted a lack of racial and ethnic diversity in participant recruitment, which could affect the applicability of findings to broader patient populations. Additionally, socioeconomic disparities were evident in research examining treatment adherence and health outcomes, with lower-income participants facing greater challenges in accessing follow-up care…
