Null vs. Alternative Hypothesis

A null hypothesis (H₀) and an alternative hypothesis (H₁) serve as foundational elements in quantitative research.
- The null hypothesis states that there is no significant relationship or no difference between variables. It represents the default assumption that any observed effect is due to chance. For example, “There is no significant difference in patient satisfaction scores between telemedicine and in-person consultations.”
- The alternative hypothesis proposes that there is a significant effect or relationship between variables. It is what the researcher aims to support. For instance, “Patients using telemedicine report significantly higher satisfaction scores than those attending in-person consultations.”
