The National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) identifies seven types of elder abuse. Here is a list and definitions for each:

  1. Physical Abuse: The use of physical force that may result in bodily injury, physical pain, or impairment. This includes acts such as hitting, slapping, pushing, shaking, burning, or inappropriate use of drugs and physical restraints.
  2. Emotional or Psychological Abuse: The infliction of anguish, pain, or distress through verbal or nonverbal acts. This can include verbal assaults, threats, harassment, intimidation, humiliation, or isolation from friends, family, or regular activities.
